I agree with this, espesially the satin finish if you want more of a sheen.

Just an update for everyone who helped. I actually decided to go with some clear matt varnish as I had already painted the wood and couldn't find any clear oil based satin. It seems to have the effect I want after a few coats, just hope it doesnt yellow to quickly. Thanks again for everyones help, it was much appreciated.
