I've got a copy of the sales receipt with his name and address and his signature, which I've enclosed with the V5C to the DVLA along with a letter of explanation.
Will they:
a. understand what's happened and process the paperwork OK?
b. completely miss the point?
or
c. demand a pound of flesh in a court of law?

(a) is most unlikely. Remember, these are government bureaucrats. Hence, they do not possess common sense.
If you forget, then you're still responsible for parking fines, speeding tickets, worse etc in that you'd be required to name the driver of the car, and if you can't.....there is a SLIGHT chance you'd have to take the penalty.
But, I'm sure it does happen every now and again. If that's the case, then there's 4 ways round it: If you're local to the buyer, pay them a visit to get them to sign it. If you're not, then post it for them to sign it and then send it to DVLA. Or, get them to apply for a V5 (ie it were lost), you (as the registered keeper) will get a letter informing you of this and if its okay to pass the registered keeper onto the buyer.
Or the most pragmatic, but strictly not legal route: sign it yourself or get a mate with different handwriting to sign it then send it off.

I normally let them fill their details, they handle it, leave prints, handwriting, if it's been forgotten, a scribble will suffice.Been there.

Well, this is what I've done and if they don't like it, they can hang me for it!
He has effectively done what is asked on the V5C (to sign to confirm his address) by signing my sales receipt so I can't see an issue. It's just that the sales receipt is not part of the V5C, that's all.

I know slightly off topic but it is about selling a car .
My son wants to sell a Alfa Romeo Guilietta asap, reason new job with car supplied.
He has tried We buy any car .com. but they have messed him about in reducing price first quoted, said reason was due to clerical error , yeh.
He accepts he wont get as much as if he sold privately but he is prepared to accept that due to time and business commitments.
Does anybody know or had experience of selling a car quickly for a fair price.

Define a fair price with these cash for cars places.....take Glass's guide valuation, knock off 20% and thats about what you'll get, I'm afraid.

I was offered £70 for an old car on 'webuyanycar.com' - got £175 scrap.
Anobium - chuck it on ebay on a 7 day auction and it will find its price, there are so many buyers looking all the time (private and trade) that it will fetch what it's worth at the time. From experience this is about half way between webuyanycar/part ex prices and normal private sale prices.
