Selmar Turbo 8 battery charger help

Looking at other posts on this battery charger, it would seem around 35 years old, back then we tended to use metal rectifiers which had a much higher resistance than the modern type, also the transformer was low quality, and it relied on this poor quality so the current with a discharged battery was reduced to a safe level.

They are built exactly as shown in the pics.

EDIT and the Lidl chargers from 30 years ago use the same style of rectifier.

I may be blind but I couldn’t see the Tilde symbol on the rectifier or the spades can you see them in any of the pictures I uploaded so I can be aware of the area for future reference.

Correct! Instead of the tilde symbol, in your photo of the rectifier, they marked the ac input terminals with 'AC' instead.

Yes you're right, it was when on the building of Sizewell 'B' so some time ago. Today I use the 3.8 and 5 amp chargers from Lidi, and if I want the car in a hurry a battery pack, that has a 12 Ah lead acid inside it. The problem today is batteries are sealed, so the old type battery chargers are now no good. I built a power supply for my son, and it was massive, as the only method to regulate output was analogue when I built it, today we use a switch mode control method, so the transformer is high frequency type, so much smaller and cheaper, and much less heat is generated, so the whole unit is so much smaller.
