And as far as recommendations go, it's a British Standard, just like 7671.

The alarm can be added to a lighting circuit - or any other circuit for that matter.

It can be argued that this is better as you will more likely notice if the power to the alarm is off.

Don't most alarms beep to let you know that they have no power?
 
Don't know about the latest panels, but the ones I used to install just dropped the power indicator when the mains failed.
 
If the back up battery has failed, does the system tell you?
Most of them, not all. Some domestic cheap ones don't notify in any way and some do but can easily be ignored.
