Old Bernina Record sewing machine - working, then kept on running when foot control released. Took cord from machine, disconnected foot control, plugged cord in, motor started again.
Anyone any idea on what is faulty?

Should'nt work without control. If control removed and plugged direct it will run all the time( no switch)

Thanks for your reply wingcoax.
Tried again - plugged cord into machine without foot control, motor runs.
Plugged in to foot control, motor runs, clicking foot control has no effect.
Puzzled.

Sounds like your foot control is kaput,If you feel comfortable doing it try opening up the control and looking if anything has come adrift. failing that i think you are going to have to bite the bullet and get a new control.

If the motor runs even when the foot is unplugged the problem is the capacitor in the machine.
In this Bernina remove the belt cover and short belt.
Remove the motor cover (2 screws on bottom)
Remove the black capacitor that has the wires coming out of it by the motor.

I dont see how the capacitor could be at fault when the machine runs with the on off switch in the off position 'failed foot control switch yes'

The capacitors on machines are mainly for RF filtering or motor starting and this machine has no problems with motor starting.

As a note most machines also have an on off switch on the main part of the machine somewhere.
