Hi.

Sorry if this is a dumb post/rant.
We moved into a house last year and some of the cladding on the wooden leanto has started to break down due to it not being treated by past owners.

I need to replace about 5x2m lengths. I popped to B&Q (big mistake) and it's about £11 per one.. but it was full of holes, bent etc. I spoke to the sales person and they said it sounds like I need the better quality ones. These went for around £16 per one!

I went to wicks and similar issue. I then went to Bradford's who prices were a little more expensive with the same issue (warped/knot holes).

Has shiplap cladding REALLY gone up this much or are they just ripping people/me off?!
About 5-8 years back it was around £6-7 a really good quality piece.

i'm new to the area (Somerset) so just checking out local sellers but prices seem similar..

Prices of timber has gone through the roof especially treated timber but with that said it is a rip off without a doubt especiallyn by the, so called, big box stores.
It really has. I've noticed over the years even cheap wood has gone insane. It just seemed like an extra jump with the cladding specially for the very poor quality. What's the point of cladding if it's full of holes lol.

i'm popping to a local wood merchant today hoping it'll be cheaper! Im not holding out much hope though lol

Replace with cement board, no rot , no holes, no maintenance. Cheaper.

The meteoric price rises in timber that we saw during and after the pandemic put paid to several medium size construction and joinery contractors I use to know. On one job our structural C24s doubled in price over a 12 month period (which the cluent was reluctsnt to pay for even just in part) as a combination of Covid and Brexit (graded vac-vac treated C24s often come in from Germany). Whilst prices have dropped back a bit, they are still high whilst I'd say that softwood quality has indeed declined markedly over the last 5 years

May be a stupid question but is that compatible with wooden cladding?

No not a stupid question, only helpful if you were to replacing it all.
That may be something we will look at in the future. Seems like the better option but to do just one side it would cost around £300 >_< Its a bit out of our pricerange at the moment sadly. I guess we could just do the smaller side with them and take off all the wood. Ty for the info!

Thanks for that link I've never seen or heard of that before. Would you happen to know how flexible it is, if at all, as I have a job I could use it on but it would need to be a bit flexible.

Very common especially in coastal locations as it’s unaffected by the harsher weather .Not flexible .
