Should asylum seekers be allowed to work while their claim is processed

Of course.

But this thread is about asylum seekers. That's often families, lone children, teens etc. that are vulnerable, afraid, orphaned, and not in a position to work anyway.

But ... discourage them financially - when you have nothing, and have had to dodge bullets, bombs and visits from the secret police, just having nothing is an improvement.

If I was such a person, I doubt I would travel half way across the world, through many safe havens, with the assistance of gangsters to get to the UK. The problem is always - weeding the genuine from the crooks.

Most don't. But of those that do, they probably said the same thing.

Don't forget, many people are leaving homes, cars, and jobs that many Brits could only dream of.

And, remember that the Syrian war has now been going on for over 1- years (started 15 March 2011). If you lived in a tent with no food, water, rights, warmth, for all those years, and a friend said they'd look after you if you could, would you not try to make a better life?

What if this was your home?

25,000 migrants paddeling across from France to date

it’s big bussiness in France

The french border force scoundrels
Must be on back handers ;)

Back handers? Why would they need to be bribed to not stop them leaving?
We'd do exactly the same.

What is a much better idea is to process the applications quicker and get them settled so they are in a position to contribute to society.

True, but that is not happening, they are being put up in hotels for years.

Who have crossed several perfectly safe countries and paid criminals to provide a boat, so they can get to here. It simply does not hang together. If you are dodging all those things, you stop dodging as soon as you find somewhere safe, the first safe country you come to - you don't cross several countries and pay criminals to get you across dangerous channel crossing, risking your life.

LOL. Yeah, of course we'd stop migrants leaving - we'd beg them to stay!

no

but we would not sanction them
Getting on rubber boats and paddling to France

or assist them to paddle to France

wonder what the french scoundrels would make of it if it was the other way around

french are the problem

bribes
Back Handers
Corruption

The best angle to reduce economic migrants is to discourage them financially. Imagine a system where you could come over, apply for asylum, get work for 6 months and then get sent home, just to try again. Probably with all their tax and NI paid back. I read recently that the government is trying to do deals to process claims off-shore. i.e you cross the channel and get shipped to a processing centre in Albania. Now that would probably discourage more than a few.

Yes but the yuppies complained about human rights etc so think the idea was getting canned

They're paying a fortune to get on the boats aswell...

No, we've gone over this before, very recently.

First, very very few come to the uk. Most do stop sooner. If those that come here, it is because they have support in place, often close family members that will help them. Plus, they might be fluent in English if professionals, so their best chance for good work is here.

So, imagine if there's a uk civil war, and you have to flee to survive. And imagine if our neighbours were all dangerous like Syrias neighbours.

Where do you go? Well be maybe you can speak Greek, and maybe you have family there, running a business. Oh, and you know you're not welcome anywhere at all.

You've got your wife and kids, and you've got one chance to avoid a decade in a refugee tent camp.

What would you do? Put yourself in their shoes. They don't make this journey because we stick them in a crappy hotel while processing them.

Afaik The majority are single men

not families / woman and children

they generally get left behind ?

Whilst the idea these refugees come here for money, it doesn’t make much sense.

they often give up their life savings to people smugglers for this journey…….and lots of these refugees are well educated and had professions before they left.

They left because of war or persecution, not money.
