Should kitchen taps and waste strainers ALWAYS have sealant?

Morning all

Had a plumber fit our new kitchen sink and taps a couple of days ago. He did not use any form of sealant for the kitchen tap (which was fitted through a hole in the wooden work surface). Nor did he use anything to seal the two basket strainer wastes fitted to the ceramic sink.

I enquired about this and he said there was no need to because the items all have washers/rubber seals. I was happy to take his word for it but after a couple of days of thinking it over I'm not so sure.

We won't be using the sink for a couple of weeks because the hard wax finish we used takes a long time to cure. So I cannot be sure whether everything is water tight or not.

But in the meantime I wondered what other plumbers and handymen think about installing without any silicone, putty, or ????.

Cheers

It is not required. I always do though for belt and braces.

If your stuff isn't leaking then there isn't much you can do unless you fancy paying him to do those bits again.
