shower tray

I have a plumber trying to fix my bathroom. I am not at location but I am being told that the shower tray has cracked after he turned on shower and the hot water has cracked the tray.

Is this possible or is the plumber trying to cover up. He has stated that he has removed the tray due to the crack !!!!

I think it was a plastic tray. I only got the shower room done 2 years ago and used it very rarely. En-suite room.
