single 2g switch controlling both internal & external li

My house has a porch which has a single 2gang light switch on the wall.

one side controls the porch ceiling light
the other the external wall light. ( well..used to )

the cable coming from the porch light to the switch is a 3core & earth
and the cable going to the external is a T&E

the unused core of the porch light cable is simply terminated in a piece of strip.

the earth of both cables simply go nowhere and are left loose in the backbox
( surface mounted plastic )

the outside, used to work, now.. it does not.
is there a way of connecting a new light up?

also would like some opinions on the 3 core being used
and similarly the earths going nowhere.

Has the switch been changed? Looks wired incorrectly to me.

Maybe grey and the external black should be in the terminal block.

And the external red in L1

ive re done the diagram to make it clearer

the neautral (BLUE) to external is in "1way"
the line (BROWN) from external is in common
the earth from external is loose

the line (brown) from ceiling is in common
the switched line ( black with small brown sleeve ) is in "1way"
the grey is in a terminal block
the earth left loose

with a connection between both COMMS

As Andy says, it may be wired up wrong.

It's a POSSIBILITY the grey in the connector block is meant to provide a neutral for the outside light.

Any hidden joints, and the wiring at the outside light and the porch light should help confirm this, so get your camera out.

no nothing has been changed

although Im looking for an excuse to change the porch light
so if you see something that needs changing by that diagram
let me know lol

all connections are fine in there

and that is the only cable ( i can trace it )
from outside - in

and that cable goes directly to the switch as in the diagram

sadly no camera available ( would be a help I admit )

You've already been told what's wrong.

Remove the blue from switch and connect to the grey wire block.

Move external light brown wire to 1W


Earths should be connected together
