This is for my musing only, having built a TF double skin house 27 years ago...

Would a 9, 10 or even 12" timber wall, insulated and battened and clad in say wood or cedral be acceptable BR wise in UK? Vertical cladding implies cross battening, so a max 2" cavity.

Interest only, but I just wondered what the rules and the pros might say.

Ta Woody. I only suggested the big thicknesses for the increased insulation, Though I am surprised that 27 years after I opted for 6" framing, 4" will still meet the regs?

Just spotted you mentioned the insulation type. I guess the new stuff beats my 6" thickness of rockwool!

I'm not sure on the newer requirement since last summer, but 100mm frame, 100mm Celotex between and at least 20mm, preferably 50mm across the inside would do.

External, cladding on 25mm battens would give sufficient cavity.
