Sink Strainer Problem

Can you remove the trap and take a picture of the sink waste from underneath and above so we can see??
Thanks for your reply. The problem is at my sister's house, 12 miles away
and I have to revisit. I have capped it off temporarily and will go back to

The reason I ask is that I've never heard of a sink with an integrated waste and that it rusts, they're usually removable therefore replaceable. I'd be checking again to see if it does come apart.
If it is physically part of the 1/2 bowl sink and has rusted away (stainless steel?) so the trap won't secure to it then I'd be looking at replacing the sink TBH. How did you cap it off?

Hi, Madrab. There is definitely only one item protruding through the bottom
of the sink bowl. A tailpiece of about 1.5in long with a diameter of about 43mm
from top to bottom to fit a 40mm trap. With no visible means of securing the
strainer to the bowl, I am now thinking it may have been cemented into the hole
but cannot see any cement material.
I have managed to cap it temporarily with a 40mm cap which has more thread
available than the removed trap securing ringnut and inserted a 1.75 sinkplug
in the top drainhole. I do have to revisit to more closely review the problem.
I am not a plumber and had gone there not for the sink prob but to fix a dishwasher
control panel problem. The sink leak and a tap washer issue arose and I kind of got
involved. Changed a couple of tap washers but the sink is yet to be sorted.
Will come back to you after my next visit to the house.

If you can get a picture too, that would give us an idea of how it looks and help us to help you more efficiently. 
That thing could possibly be made to work as a temporary thing, but the real solution is to buy a new waste for the sink (the part you have called a 'strainer').

A temporary fix and not best solution, I agree. The kitchen is to be upgraded/refurbed
in a few months, so it should be good in the meantime. Of course, if I manage to remove
the old sink waste outlet , I will renew it.
