How do you calculate the csa of the earth flylead from the banjo of a SWA cable gland?

And do you *always* have to connect a flylead to it, or is it ok sometimes just to make the gland off without a banjo? Like when terminating the cable in a metal clad socket?

On the smaller sizes, use the same as the live conductors and you won't go wrong, on the bigger sizes refer to tabel 54G

AFAIK as long as good metal to metal contact is acheiveable (no paint, rust, etc) then there is no actual need to use the banjo, however you must flylead the front or appiances are unearthed when the front is removed. Most people use the banjo as a matter of course and good practice tho :)

Connect the actual socket outlet 'front' to the boxbox (patress) via a flylead, otherwise you have no earth to the applicances if you take the screws out to for any reason.

(I beleive its acceptable for a metal pattress to be earthed through the screws from a metal socket providing at least one lug is fixed, but not the other way round where the earth connection in question is providing the earth to applicances)
