I have just had a reproduction Victorian fireplace installed, and need to put in some skirting board. There are lugs sticking out the side of the fireplace which prevent simply attaching the skirting board to the wall all the way up to the main body of the fireplace.

One option would be to chisel out suitable holes in the back of the skirting board and put board all the way up to the main body of the fireplace. Another would be to somehow finish the skirting board off before it gets to the fireplace.

All suggestions welcome.

hi mate,

Sounds to me like the tidiest looking solution would be to chisel out the back of the skirting just as you say.

practice with an old bit of wood first before you do the real thing, if of course your not sure

not shure how much you have to remove but you might find it easier to do several overlapping areas with somthing like an 18mm spade[flat wood bit]

if the point is likely to poke through then just drill less and finnish with a sharp chisel
