Doesn't happen huh? Here's a pic of a painted panel on a pine door in my living room. The missus painted this door about 7 years ago. Over the last 2 years or so the paint has split at the side of the panel. Note, only the sides - the top and bottom are fine. There's your proof that wood noticably shrinks over time. That amount of shrinkage would be noticable on an internal, big time.
