Sliding door handle stuck and not able to turn

Ideally the door handle should be in horizontal to open and to lock it should be turned up. The picture shows how it should be. Somehow without the door locked, the handle is turned up. Now i am not able to turn the handle in any direction.

Any suggestions?

More than likely a problem with the lock mechanism so remove it and have a look to see if you can fix it, if not then just replace.
