Hello,

wondered if anyone could advise me?

When I log on to the internet the connection takes forever.

After logging on the response is still very slow when searching the

net. The system seems to freeze up and not responding appears

at the foot of the page. As the connection is on Broadband surely

this shouldn't be the case.

any help would be appreciated.

Could be a number of things.

When did you last do a disk cleanup?

When did you last defrag your hard disk?

Have you got anti-virus software installed?

Have you got anti-spyware installed?

Modem or router?

Which isp?

Machine spec/operating system?

It helps to provide as much detail as you can in one post as it saves us time in asking.

Yes got anti-virus (F-SECURE)

Modem.

AOL

Windows

Disk cleanup!?

Defrag hard disk!?

Well, nearly all the answers I suppose

I'll assume Windows XP as you didn't say.

You could do with an anti-spyware application and there are many to choose from and lot's are free. Do a google for spybot or windows defender or search the forum as it has been covered many many etc... times here. Install it, run it and let it clean up. You may be surprised how much junk you have inadvertently installed.

AOL. Have a look at this. The MTU setting is the bit to look at.

Disk cleanup. START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEM TOOLS>Disk Cleanup.

Run this, let it scan. You can probably check all the boxes and let it clean up any clutter that has collected. Do this regularly.

Defrag. Over time bits of your programs and data get separated from each other and cause the disk to have to seek for them. Defrag basically puts the bits back together to increase efficiency. Do this regularly. It's in the same place as disk cleanup above.

Do the disk cleanup first, then the anti-spyware and then the rest.

Post back when you have done all that. Should keep you busy for a bit. ;)

Also, make sure all your service packs are up to date and that you are running the latest drivers for your kit.

Igorian,

Did all the things you suggested. Seems much faster.

Downloaded microsoft updates also.

I can now log on without falling to sleep whilst waiting.

THANKS very much!
