Hi folks,

I need to put a small LED ceiling light in a small (approx 1.2m x 1.1m) toilet which has a low ceiling. I'm thinking of something roughly 150 -200 mm in diameter, as 'slim' as possible and probably around 12W.

Despite my general version to 'throwaway' ('integrated') light fittings, I think I may well be stuck with that, since I think thst s traditional 'downlight' would be less than ideal.

Given the 'throwaway' nature, I would at least hope to be able to install something that could, if necessary, be replaced without too much difficulty or damage to the ceiling. Unfortunately, although a good few are described as 'surface mounting, there is s lot of vsristion as regards how they are attached, how power is supplied to them and what sort of holes they require in the ceiling. Another issue seems to be that ones which are not 'tiny' (75-100 mm) tend to be more powerful than I want/need.

I'm therefore hoping to find something which is such that it could, if/when needed, be replaced (with something)without too much hassleor need for 'remedial work' to the ceiling. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Kind Regards, John

<link> ..... Are these any use? They just slide into a base socket.
Thanks. I actually got one of them, to see what it was like, but there are some issues.

Firstly, the 12W one (which is what I got) is tiny (about 85mm diameter), not really large enough rto cover any sort of 'backbox', should one wish to use one.

Secondly, the 'base socket' is sealed, and has just literally a couple of inches of 2-core cable emerging from it (see pic). It would not be easy to connect that to the supply within any sort of enclosure, so I'd probably end up with just a couple of Wagos/whatever poked through a hole in the ceiling. I suspect some might regard this item as "eBay tat" :-)

If I did use something like this, I'd certainly buy at least one spare at the start, because I can't inagine any future fitting being compatible with that socket!

Ebay tat, but they are neat and do the job.

I used a couple of similar ones, in my kitchen, a good even light from them, and they have been in use for quite a few years now. As supplied, the lead was short _ opened the socket up, and soldered a longer lead on, did a joint in a wago, and pushed that up the existing holes. The fitting didn't quite cover the holes in the ceiling, so I turned up some sort of circular trim, to make them look tidy.

Beaten to it!
I have a couple - nicely made, look good with the additional bezels and seemingly reliable.
They clip onto a ceiling bracket, but do come with a short length (approx 6") of two core flex, that will need attaching in a manner similar to what you have said above.

...and just to say, they are possibly user serviceable (if you don't mind some soldering)? The light is provided by an LED strip stuck around an inner ring, rather than by PCB mounted LEDs.

That's how they looked, which is why I bought one 'to see'

That was my first inclination, but it looks as if it would need a 'tin openier' to open up the socket, so I hesitated - but they are so cheap that I might try.

In fact, provided that Mr Jobsworth is not looking, I may try just using the (very) short cable as it is, and a couple of 'in-line' Wagos, perhaps encased in shrink wrap 'as a gesture'! That would gop through a very small hole :-)

Yes, as I implied, something like that might well be necessary.

How about one of these: ...
Thanks. I'm not sure how I missed that, since TLC was one of the first places I looked - maybe I didn't search for "LED panel". It sounds very suitable, in its 'surface mount mode'.

They offer 6W and 12W variants (amongst others). Do you think that 6W would be adequate for the tiny roomI've described. I ask because I have a similar size loo here which is more than adequately lighted by a 5W LED candle bulb

Kind Regards, John

Thanks. As I've just written, it sounds very suitable.

Thanks again - that's useful information. I'm certainly no averse to 'some soldering'!

I have the 6W in my 0.85 x 2.00m downstairs loo - it's plenty bright enough.

If 6w is the rating of the LED, rather than an equivalent, then it should be more than adequate, depending on the fitting style. I have 3.5w bathroom. stairs and landing, 2x 8w as the ceiling lighting, in my large kitchen. 3x 8w wall-lights, in the living room, usually only two in use dimmed.

Buy a 6 w and try it. It’s only a cloak room
