Smart motorways .....such a dumb idea.

Just watching it... time to get rid of these appalling death traps.

They are awful. I'm in tears... Thst poor lady who lost her son while she had another son fighting for his life in hospital.

Stop them now...

What is really galling is the presenter driving down the stretch where deaths occurred while taking his eyes off the road and a hand off the wheel while explaining to the camera what he was doing........DAF!!!!

So for comparison, how many people have been killed on "normal" motorways during the same period?

The program did a comparison on near misses on a stretch of motorway. Pre smart there were ~70 ,smart there were ~1400

In France they overtake and return to lane like its some kind of religion. I'm positive there is some sort of rule that says you must hold your breath while overtaking. Much better lane discipline. Here we seem to use the lanes like they do in the US where basically, you just spread out.
In other countries dumb ass artiks do not overtake with a 1mph differential..and stick to the inside lane

Call me a cynic (as Mrs Secure did!), but these smart motorways have two "smart" aspects to them:

1. Variable speed limits

2. Automated stranded vehicle detection in order to shut a live lane.

Only the M25 has the second.

But I bet ALL the "smart" motorways have a fully functional set of speed cams.

With some of the vehicle detection cameras out of action for months at a time, very reassuring.... not!
