smelly kitchen units

Has anyone any ideas to get rid of a horrid smell from kitchen units, it's causing the dishes that are kept in there to have the same stench. The place is well ventilated however is there any possible cure apart from putting in new units? I was thinking of maybe a wood treatement of similar or summat to clean them with, any ideas?

Wash them out with hot water+bicarbonate of soda,it works for fridges so it should work for the cupboards.After that wipe them allover the insides with milton sterelising fluid(available from boots the chemist).
