I need to add another 2 gang socket alongside an existing one. i am thinking about using a socket converter. how are they attached? do i need to sink in another mounting box or is it just a case of removing the existing socket and replacing it with the new one?

Thanks

if looks are not important then you can simply mount a surface plastic box next to your existing socket and provided the socket your coming from is part of the ring main then simply spur the new double one off of it with one twin and earth cable, meaning you have 3 cables in the back of your old socket and one in your new one. if however there is only one cable in the socket you are proposing to come off of then you have a spur already and cannot extend it further. or it could be on a radial circuit, the rating of the fuse should tell you at the board, i.e. if its a 30 amp fuse its likely to be a ring, a 16 or 20 and a radial is probable.

hope this helps

hi, thanks for the reply. I think a new mounting box and double socket by the side is the way to go. No problem with sinking it in te the wall either as its plasterboard walls.
cheers
