If I had to choose between a mortared-in box, or one held by glue and filler, or one relying on screws into notoriously difficult and frangible breeze, I'd go for mortar.

Personally I'd find it easier to fill the aerated cinder block air spaces (if that's what it is) with some of the resin based adhesives than gritty sand based products.
