Can you help me ,I have a double socket mounted on the skirting board that I want to remove and replace with two single sockets mounted three feet either side. the two cables "one from the fuse box and one going through to the next room " are unable to be stretched or pulled to gain more length , how do I resolve this problem Thank You Donbren.

Hi

I had to do something similar.

Basically I moved the first socket closer to the CU (fusebox) to get more slack and the second socket closer to the next socket in line again to get more slack. You'll need a new piece of cable to join between the two new sockets.

I had to lift a few floor boards to do the above.

Are you really set on the location?

Also why fit single gang sockets? It's usually better to fit doubles.

Alternatively you can use longer cables, but you need to really know what you are doing to change the one to the fusebox, and wil probably involve more work lifting floorbaords etc. And it may then count as notifiable work as a partial rewire - any advice from the pros?

Also when adding new sockets the ring should be protected by an RCD. If you have an old fusebox this may not be the case.

Hello.
It may be best to test the existing circuit before you do this work. Is the installation 'old' ? Or is the 'point' where you are extending the ring an alteration/addition ? I only ask because of the location of this socket being in the skirting  .

Thank you for your reply,,the double socket I want to replace is in a bedroom situated behind a bed, it has two table lamps plugged into it which are situated on cabinets either side of the bed, my plan is to remove it and have a single socket adjacent to each cabinet,
I was thinking I could fit a type of junction box and then run wiring to each single socket, the cableing has been in for eight years,it has been run from the fuse box up to the bed room under the floor and then through and fixed to the skirting board ,due to the structure the cable cannot take any other route,it cannot be pulled or stretched, Cheers Don

What size is the fuse it may be a radial circuit.

you may be able to use the existing socket box as a junction box with a blank plate and do new wiring from there

a double either side would be more use than a single.. one for the lamp and one for a clock or phone charger etc..

you could always swap the double socket for a dual backbox and fit it with 2 x FCU's then take the new sockets one off each...
