The e-mail I sent to SS today pretty much says it all...

Dear Customer Services

I received a SS Fountain Jet machine for a birthday present in August this year.

I am shocked to learn that you have discontinued the Alco2jet gas cylinders so soon.

To add insult to injury, you are requesting proof of purchase before I can be "eligible for a special offer" to make my < 3 month old obsolete machine, which I gather cost in excess of £50, useable again.

At the moment, it is a useless worktop ornament, gathering dust. Please let me know what you propose to do so I can start using the machine for its intended purpose.

Simon Abbott.

my mum bought one of those about 35 years ago, think it has been used about 3 times since then!! you can buy 2 litres of coke for £1, why bother making it

get busy with the fizzy....sodastream.....except you cant...oh well they tatse like **** anyway!

Dunno what cylinders these take, but have you tried the various home-brew shops about the place? There are a few different types of CO2 cylinder in use with beer barrels, some may be common to Soda Stream. Also, Wilkinson's sells the CO2 sparkler bulbs in their homebrew section.

TBH, I didn't know they still made them. Last time I got bizzy with the fizzy was 1990, round a mate's house who used to get through a good litre a day.

Can't you buy a bottle of CO2 from BOC?

There must be an adaptor on ebay, or someone from the plumbing forum will have one in their tool box.

You might want to put a tea towel on the cylinder to make it look a bit more at home in the kitchen.

Think how much pop you could make with this

can buy 4 litres of sodawater from tesco for under a quid. Probably cheaper than a gas bulb from sodyastream

It was a birthday present. I don't make soft drinks with it, just carbonate tap water.

It makes sense because I used to buy a litre of sparkling water (from a local shop, not a supermarket) every day to drink in between jobs.

While I appreciate Tesco Value water is very cheap, the 2 litre bottles are not as convenient to carry. Plus, there is the convenience of making the drink at home.

A sixty litre cylinder lasted me just under 3 months (I only put a small quantity of gas in the drink) and would cost me £6 to replace.

RF, like the idea matey! Just don't think Julie would appreciate a large iron cylinder cluttering up the kitchen...!

Secures, if its just used for this practical reason you outline above (your drinking water for work), then does it have to go in the kitchen? Could it not just go in the garage say? Just trying to think of a practical solution to RFs suggestion of using a large CO2 bottle.

From a bit of googling, it looks like the Alco2jet cylinders for this are refillable, by a dealer, and that they work in much the same way as Camping Gaz (in that you take an empty one back and pick up a full one).

Have you definitely got your facts straight about this obsolescence ? The model you mention is still on sale at Argos online...

You could drop an Alka-Seltzer tab into the bottle just before you want to drink it, I find it fizzes the water up just right :D

ah so its a debacle now not a scandel.....the plot thins......
