Soffit - normal to attach onto existing?

Is it normal or acceptable to fix white upvc replacement soffit boards onto the existing wooden ones? What if the old ones continue to rot, will it not create problems later?

Also what are the options for high end ones (since I'm remodeling my house anyway)?

if its around 9mm cadding you replace and treat the rotten bits off timber then clad you should never leave untreated or rotten timbers in situ
