Soundproofing

Does anyone know of a soundproofing material which is suitable to go under wallpaper. Its a very narrow room so there is no space to build even a slim false wall, which would be the ideal in this case.

I once used a very expensive rubber foam hessian product sold by the role in a clients house- the main aim was heat insulation rather than sound although it did help.

Horrible to work with.
