Spikey plants to keep intruders out

I`ve got a wooden fence all around my back garden which just consists of lawn and a bit of old patio. Can anyone recommend a good spikey or thawny climbing plant that will grow along the top of my fence. Or a bush that will grow as tall as my fence? ( fence is 6 + 8'high)
Preferably something hardy, that doesn`t need special soil and a lot of farting about to look after it.

pyracanthea, ow, ow ,ow ! Evergreen, fully hardy covered in red berries in autumn, and is very very prickly
