i have eight spot lights on the celling in the kichen and four of them have gone out. how do i get them working again

Remove the bulbs (circlips for the GU10's often enough) and try a replacement bulb.....if they are 12v ones, the transformer will be in the void on a length of cable once the whole fitting is prised clear from the ceiling.
John :)

four of them are working and four are out if i take the bulbs out and try to pull the cable to get at the transformer i will lose the cable. do i have to take all bulbs out and try to locate the transformer? i have took the bulbs out of the ones that are not working and they are ok i just need to locate the transformer that powers the four that are out. how would i do that?

You shouldn't lose the transformer - it will be connected into its own junction box so try to feed the cable out of the lamp hole.
Often enough there is one transformer per lamp - but only if they are 12v bulbs, naturally.
It would be unusual to say the least if all transformers have failed. Did the 4 bulbs go off at the same time?
John :)

yes john the four started to dim and then all went out together. i have tried to pull the cable through the holes but there is no give in any of them. each light has a black box connected to the cable i thought i was looking for a white box which would control all four lights?

Ok, can we be sure the bulbs you are using are definitely 12v?
Have a look at the glass and post back with the GU or MR code?
Some transformers can handle up to 300w and therefore can drive more than one bulb, so its got to be up there somewhere.....is there any other void in the ceiling where the thing could be hiding?
Do you have a dimming system, incidentally?
John :)

they are 12v. they are halagen bulbs and it is not on a dimmer all it has on the bulb is 38exn/cl and 12v/50w. i have pulled each on out and all of them have a black box fitted that is all.

Pound to a Ten pence Piece , It`ll be a B&Q type set , where you have a tranny feeding 4 Downlights as part of a Linked Kit , plus these Kits usually feed 4x20watt Lamps , customers feel that they are`nt bright enough , so they change the lamps to 35 or 50watt and knacker the Tranny , You may be Lucky and have a 300va Tranny somewhere in the Ceiling void

Last one I did like this meant me going into a RoofVoid across a different Roof space some 12m wide ! , to get to 2x300va Transformers that fed some Downlights fitted in a Part Vaulted ceiling - YES it was a ball ache , ate least the Customer knew where the trannys where - that helped !

Lucky

PS - Have you upgraded the lamps recently ???
