Hi all Im in the process of building a single story extension to the rear of my property, the ceiling is vaulted the rafters are 8x2 with 150mm of kingspan for insulation, I was thinking about having spot lights recessed into the ceiling but wasn't sure if this can be done? I know kingspan is not flammable but surely there must be a certain gap between the spot lights and the kingspan? And surely by doing this there will several cold spots in the kitchen? Also i know if I was to use 5w led spot lights they don't give out much heat, but could it cause condensation in the ceiling. The felt where using is breathable.
Any advise is appreciated.[/b]

The main problem is there will be gaps in the kingspan, and there shouldn't be.

Because of this, you can't have recessed downlights.

The only way is to construct a lower, 'false' ceiling below, and fit the recessed lights into that.

What do you want downlights for anyway? They are old hat now, and a bit 'common' now, according to my butler.

Uplight will be ideal- if,the ceiling is painted white. The space will feel larger and if you install a dimmer you have all the flexibility you would need.

I personally think down lights are so 90's !

Kind Regards,

DS

At the rear of my property there is a kitchen and a dining room, and with the extension with the vaulted ceiling. I'm going to knock the existing kitchen into the dining room and then open up the back of the house into the extension so it will be one big space. I will have lights in the existing kitchen and dining room but The only problem is the area below the vaulted ceiling is going to be a kitchen and I don't want this to be a dark space I would like it to be nice and bright.

I have been on jobs where the builders have created 'boxes' in the vaulted ceiling so downlights could be used. Somehow these boxes were formed within the ceiling.

They were satisfied it complied to building regs, don't know if it did, but they got their lights.

Your extension will be subject to Building Regs as determined by your local building control.

The will NOT allow you to wreck the thermal properties of the insulation by you digging great holes in it. They will not sign it off unless it has been done with their agreement.

I have seen this done with the "boxes" and also with what is called a warm ceiling (a void for the lights under the Kingspan). But you need to get your LABC to agree with whatever lights you have in mind.

Oh, and make sure you comply with Part L when you choose your lights!!

Our wholesalers now do a 150mm LED downlighter that is only 15mm deep (yes 15mm!) so can be installed in vaulted ceilings without wrecking the insulation.
