hi, how do i sort squeky stairs? I have read in the diy manuel about putting blocks under them, but i cant do this as i cant access the bottom. I pulled back the carpet, and put nails in where it squealed, and this worked for about a week, but has started again, and is getting worst. Any ideas please?

Hi mate, it is about 1979. The upstairs floorboards are not long strips that I remember as a kid but square chip board, if that helps at all?

When you say that you can't access the underside is that because it's plastered? You may find that you will have to cut into this to cure your problem, not as drastic as it sounds, it's possible to use a short jigsaw blade to cut out "access panels" in the plasterboard to work through and then refix the panels , fill and repaint.
Oh, and you'd be better off using screws rather than nails any day , much easier to remove if the squeak doesn't go away and you need to start again.

Yes it is plaster board, in an understairs cupboard. I'll give that a go then, thanks, at least if I screw it up it hidden in the cupboard.

sounds like the wedges have ome adrift, these are usually held in with a large smack with a hammer and copius ammounts of pva.

What went wrong with ours was the riser fixings into the treads being loosened by carpet fitters, took the plasterboard off hte back and screwed it all together - squeak no more.
