Stair noses?

I am replacing a very small set of steps , 2 steps , in my house due to a level change with an extension. Just wondering if i need to put a bull nose on the step treads or is it ok just to have a square edge? Is there any reason for the bull nose or is it just decorative? The treads and risers are going to be carpeted.

if you have a "sharp" edge the carpet will wear quicker along the top corner
