Stair stringer coming out of celling in living room - what are my options?

Hi All - my stair stringer comes out of the celling in the living room, the developers have plastered over it but it still looks dreadful! I wanted to see what my options were in making it look better or solving the issue! All replies are much appericated.

You could either box around it better or fit new stairs that start 3 steps sooner.

Thank you Ian for your reply, I think the new stairs option might be out of the equation because of the price, although probably the best idea. Looks like it's going to have to be boxed off, which isn't ideal aesthetically but I don't think there's any other option!

its the sort off thing that annoys the hell out off you until it doesn't
then you never notice it
move your thoughts and efforts to other areas then in a years time recalculate your annoyance over cost to rectify and i bet then its just part off the houses funny foibles
