Stairs in softwood or mdf

Most joiners use some softwood and mdf in the construction of the stairs.

I wondered what it would be like in ALL softwood. I know it costs more, but we want to paint the sides of the stairs and only have carpet in the middle.

I dont think you can do this with mdf as it wouldnt look right.

Is this correct?

Are there any other positive/negative's to using softwood ?
 
coming from a door fitter, if you are paying a decent price if said man is making them from softwood (guesiing it will be your pine) make sure 'tis parana. if your tight expect bog standard.

Cheeky people saying its our fault that the stairs are squeaking 5 years down the line...
