Why is it that after being at my computer, if I get up and touch my Hi fi ( metal case ) I get a small shock :?: :(

My electrics seem to be fine and I have an up to date consumer unit. :?

If it is static then it is down to the flooring type and/or what you wear or even the type of material the seat is made from.

PVC seat and a nylon shell suit are a good mix for static..
if you add cheap laminate flooring to that with that foam type underlay to it then it's even better..

pluss lots of moving of the arms  helping to stip the electrons off the chair and onto you...

if it's that much of a concern to you i'd suggest investing in an anti-static wrist strap or ankle strap connected to a decent earth..

Been working in a block of retirement flats for a few weeks and its really getting to me, nylon carpets, every time I touch the earthed metal button on the lift I get shocks, had one today where I actually saw the spark!

Any ways to slowly discharge the static?

Just using an insulated screwdriver to press the button now

Thanks for replies.

I get static when I get out of the car too. :(

Any links to anti static products pls :?:

Did you know that most static discharge shocks are anything upto 20kv, something like a discharge from a gap of say 0.5 mm can be in the region of 2kv - 4kv.

I personally had a nerve fried in my back from static discharge, it was somewhere in the region of 200kv, so if you think that a wee zap from a car hurts then think of me, knocked me out cold, nice bit of compo though :)

When you get out of the car dont close the door by touching the bodywork, close it by putting your hand on the glass instead ! alternatively get one of the grounding strips from a motorists shop, the rubber strip has a wire inside it that touches the road thus dissipating ( big word for a sunday ) any static build up.
