Steel Beam

Hi

I am hoping to knock out the centre of a wall to allow for double sliding doors between a garage and a studio.

The roof has no plasterboard or insulation and I can see 2 purlins running the length of roof to the gable wall.

In order to knock out the opening I will need roof supports until I get a steel beam installed.

Do I have to get calculations for a beam or can I just get a steel beam?

I've always found the 'wet your finger and stick it in the air' method a little bit unreliable. If it is controlled work, then you will need the calc's to show to Building Control in any case.
