What is the latest on what needs to be PATed. Still some disagreement on this forum in regard to switched fused connected appliances. Its been 4 years since i did mine have they updated the what is a Portable appliance definition yet ?

AFAIK the definition has always been the same - some people think you should test every appliance, others have theories about only needing to test 'portable' appliances because it's called 'PORTABLE appliance testing', or getting around testing items by connecting them via FCUs.

My understanding is that all electrical equipment should be tested and that really a company should have a list of all electrical equipment and who is responsible for testing it. Some equipment it probablly makes sense to have the electricans test at the same time as the installation that feeds it. Some it makes sense to have pat guys test. Some really needs testing by specialists.

Afaict though sadly most testing isn't done out of a genuine desire to make things safer, it's done to pay lip service to the "health and safety" guys.

Thanks to both the replies and they highlight the confusion thats out there . Thats why i was interested in what Securesparks recent experience had said.

Personally i test it if it is attached to a Switched FCU and has flex going to the appliance. Why, well most people agree for example a fridge should be tested as part of PAT but often these are below a work surface (still free standing) and have a switched FCU above the surface providing power. However move the fridge out and often its still got the plug on it into a socket. Some of the FCU do not test protagonists especialy those who have to do it at 50p a test would not do this as it takes a bit of effort.

My favourite the hand dryer on the wall Switched FCU. To me the most potentially dangerous device for the general public or employee to get to know the power of electricity intimately. PAT test or not, to me its a yes to others its a no.

I will continue to do these as i personaly think they are a potential source of danger to a user but i was interested to know what is being taught on the 2377 now.

P.S. When i did mine i was taught that an appliance on a FCU was to be tested. An extractor fan was used to show us how.

Read the code of practice. It is very clear.
Still some disagreement on this forum in regard to switched fused connected appliances.
No reason why there should be. It is absolutely clear from the code of practice.

No need for any kind of update... the latest code of practice says exactly the same thing as the last one did.

Must apologise: I have been away from the PC for so long....

We were told to test extension leads as well as all the obvious candidates.
