Yes those 70W HQI fittings do produce a nice light that works well in churches. We often add 70W SON uplighters with those little double ended tubes to light the curved ceilings. The yellow glow has a nice warm feel to balance out the cold white light of the HQIs.
To be fair I found the cover glass on enclosed fittings tended to shatter more than the actual lamp itself.
Open ones were all the rage once especially for signage and tended to have a 20mm thread alowing them to screw on conduit, but when the demand for pirs came they evolved into the enclosed box ones we have now.
Rumour had it that the open ones were banned but not sure if true
