out on the street right on the line of my drive, the wife WILL be hitting it with her car next week ................

Where in the UK are you located ? Most local councils will consider a request to move the location of a street lighting column but it takes a while and you will have to pay the cost of the relocation thats around £1000 high cost due to the Electricity board being involved to remove and restore there service into the column.

To be fair to them, there is quite a lot of work involved in moving a street light, including probably jointing the supply (whilst live) and all the associated ground works.
