Can anyone suggest how to free a stuck (off) Drayton thermostatic rad valve? and/or does anyone know how they are put together? i.e. when you remove thermostatic capsule there is a round piece of brass held into the valve housing with a circlip. In the middle of this piece of brass is a small nut from which protrudes a pin about 1 - 1.5 mm in diam. I presume this pin operates the valve and is stuck. If I loosen the nut then water begins to flow and doesn't seem to leak out - is it safe to leave this nut loosened?

Well Tony... seeing that these valves can be bought for well under £10, is it worth trying to fix it? A drain down and flush through, change the valve and re-fill with corrosion inhibitor added could well prove to be more economical in the long run by stopping any more valves from sticking, rads leaking etc..etc...

You're right - but I'm lazy and wanted to avoid draining down having just done so to fit a new cylinder! Anyway, I was given suggestion to gently tap side of valve with all other rads turned off and pump running and it worked!! However, there is new corrosion inhibitor in. Many thansk.

I know this is a tad late and you've solved your problem but if ever you have to change a valve ....

close the other valve, freeze the pipe below the valve you are replacing with a freezing kit. remove and replace valve

Worked for me
