i have a problem in finding out where a small roof extraction fan is fed from on a flat roof of a small office, the local isolator on the motor housing is dead and out of ideas, a friend suggested that I use a tone generator like the ones used by BT engineers to try and sniff it out somehow, is this ok or is there another idea ?

I find a tone generator and inductive amplifier very useful for cable tracing (mains or data) - although my background is more on the comms side of things. The handy thing is once you put a tone on the cable you can pretty much trace its exact route through ceilings, walls etc (assuming its not in conduit)

I seem to remember you can get them specifically for mains use. - https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/cable-tracers-fuse-finders/1367891/
