Hi please please please can someone help, almost sure we have had a sulphate attack, apparently other houses in the street have had the same problem although this was many years ago. The house is a 1964 bungalow.
I am at my wits end trying to research this problem, there seems to be a few companies I have found that deal with this problem but I cant find one in my area (Manchester). I have rang a few builders but they dont seem to know what Im taking about and havent found one that will come and take a look and fix it. So my main question is are there different types of builder and if so what type of builder am I looking for?
Also would anyone be able to give me a rough estimate on how much this would cost, I would only want the one room doing not the whole ground floor its a 12m3 room,

Is the sulphate attack a result of say red ash infill?

Most builders will be clueless on sulphate attack. You need somebody to investigate first and prepare a specification of works for a builder to follow. Try local building surveyors.

yes a few other houses in the street suffered from red ash late 80s early 90s. Funds are really tight so dont really want to spend money on surveyors and red ash tests just to tell us what we already know. I just need a builder to come and sort it, Its my parents house who are both in their 80s one has terminal cancer and the other is showing signs of dementia I was decorating their bedroom for them when I found it so a nice gesture has turned into a nightmare for them this is why Im hoping I can just do the one room rather than all the upheaval of basically moving house.

That's fair enough but keep in mind that sulfate remedial works are usually fairly costly and it makes sense to have the documentary backup to satisfy future lenders. This means a specialist contractor or a suitable surveyor, which could specify works that any local contractor could carry out. I wouldn't mind betting the latter could end up cheaper.

That part concerns me. If one room needs to be tackled, it's likely they would all need to be done. Better if all are done than the upheaval of them being done piecemeal.
