Suspicious cable

I’m looking to change my wireless thermostat over to a nest. Removed my wireless battery powered themostat and found a buried power cable.

Erm… can I do something to check if it’s live (not the lick test).

Assuming it’s live, how do I decommission it without tearing my walls to bits to pull the cable out?

Testing it needs a two pole voltage tester ,or a meter.

No. But we’ve changed the boiler and had it moved since we moved in.
