Had white plastic light switches replaced with nice shiny chrome ones.h
However now they seem to have been changed around. To switch light on the button is in the off position and to turn them off the switch is in the on position.Help.This was done by a qualified electrician,so i am a bit worried.Any ideas as to how to rectify this

If they are two way switches used as single way in the case of C, L1 and L2 just swop the wire from L1 to L2 or vice versa.
In the case of L1, L2 and L3 swop L2 to L3 or vice versa.

If it is only a single way switch turn it the other way up.

This worries me because it makes me think I've misunderstood something about light switches...

Surely you can turn the switch the other way up even if it's a two-way used as a one-way?

thats true, but what if you have a 2-gang switch and only one operates upside down?

Call me pedantic (but don't get trampled in the rish), but that's completely different.

If you have a two gang plate then of course you'd need to move the L1/L2 wire, but that's not what Spark123 said was a condition for moving it.

What Spark123 should have written:

ok then, call me very pedantic, but what if the switchplate has a logo on it? (as MK and Tenby and Volex ones used to) It would drive me crackers to have to look at that upside down for years to come. And if I installed a switch in my own home, and had to invert it to get it working the right way up, I would know it was upside down, even if nobody else could tell, I'd know! And THAT would drive me crackers too!

Men in white coats banging at the door now. wonder what they want this time!

Ah, but for a one way one gang switch, the switch will always be the right up when the logo is the right way up. ;)

some have stopped making 1-way switches if i understand correctly. Its cheaper to just make 2-way switches now. The extra metal link costs them next to nothing. And 2-gang switches have always been 2-way too (as long as i can remember)

i can well belive this would be true for more fancy/specialist ranges, i can't imagine its true for bog standard plain white stuff.

it's a balance, more stock lines means more cost but plain white 1 gang w way switches must be used in huge volume by the new build and least cost rewire markets (more than a couple of 2 way systems in a house is unusual in my experiance)

i'm sure there are a lot less 2 gang switches sold than 1 gang ones and probablly most of those get used in situations where at least 1 gang is multi way.
