We have a new oak front door to install. Could any tell me if it's advisable to cut the letterbox in the T & G area of the door at waist level or should it be cut at the bottom in the solid area please.

what type of door - ledged and braced, or a panelled door?

Putting a letter plate in the bottom rail of a door is a security risk. It's also murder if you're a postman and have to keep bending down to feed letters in.
