evening all.

Is there a limit on how long meter tails can be? I have a job coming up where the main fuse is about 5m from the meter. Canee find anything in the big red bible about it

cheers!

I am lead to believe its a fire regulation so fire service can find isolators and around 3 meters but never found in writing also think if local isolator provided at meter you all allowed longer tails as you say not in red book.

Depends on the DNO, most allow up to 3M though at 5M I can see you needing a switch fuse.
A quick call to them will confirm.

When you say main fuse and meter do you mean the cut out and the meter or the meter and CU?

If it's the meter and CU then refer to GaryMo's post but if it's the cut out and meter it's not your problem

Afaict there is no reg in BS7671 (other than the obvious stuff about volt drop and such but that shouldn't be too much of an issue here) or any law limiting the length of tails.

Some DNOs don't care, others make up various rules about tail lengths. I think sometimes the answer you get from one DNO can even vary depending on who you ask.

District Network Operator- the guys that 'own' your meter and head, and the back end euipment between power station and premises.

Since they supply the service, they make up the rules.

In London conversion flats, the meter, the head tend on to a 2 pole isolation switch (very local to the head / meter) and then run up one or two floors in SWA of a suitable size for the load and the distance.

I was always told that isolator to CU can be any distance as long as it's designed for the distance and load.

A quick call to the DNO, is there such a thing?

3 Metres is pretty normal, anything more you'll need a switchfuse, assuming the service cutout is 100A, an 80A switch fuse is needed in order to ensure discrimination between the two fuses.

Happy Camping.
