To the OP, the best course of action for you is to decide if you want to comply with part P and notify the LABC of the work, which legally you should. If you do, you need to find out how much they will charge you for notification, some places can charge upto £300, but it varies dramatically from council to council. I am a member of a 'competent persons scheme' which means I can notify through them, it costs me £1.50 + vat per submission. As you can tell from that, the difference in the two prices means that for the LABC fee, you could get a spark to do some work for you, testing and notification. It may be preferable for you to get some quotes for the work, some electricians may be happy for you to do some donkey work, namely digging trenches, possibaly running the SWA, but DONT presume these things, ask them directly, and be sure to do exactly as they require, or give them notice if you plan on altering things, as this could lead to more costly work on their part if you should do something which they are not happy about. I would expect that small one man band type firms would be the best to approach for this, local papers or the yellow pages are the best places to look for these guys imo. Be sure to check they are members of a competent persons scheme and check how long they have been with them and how long they have had qualifications for.
