What usually holds a tap washer in place is it usually a small screw or something else?

Sometimes a nut, sometimes just push fit.

Thanks are the push fit ones usually quiet a tight fit then? Also can I ask will a basin tap reviver kit fit all basin taps as long as they are the screw down type with a washer and not the ceramic disc type.

The push fit washers can be pressed into place with your thumb - there's a ball shape on the end to prevent it coming off again.
Personally I have found that tap revivers are a good bet - but I've come to grief twice with bath tap sizes......the thread I needed was between the two supplied!

Haha famous last words!!
Maybe take the original insert with you if you can, just to check the thread diameters.

Yes, but some are 3/8.....it's worth getting one of those multipack boxes from Screwfix, then you'll have what you need.
