I need to temporarily paint over a series of unsightly damp blobs about 1m above ground level in a party wall, pending a more permanent fix, probably to an issue at roof level. It's in a rental property currently in void and I need to get some money coming in to pay for the root cause repair.

A dampproofing specialist told me to scrape back the paint and overpaint with SBR. But I thought SBR was a mortar additive? Is it more suitable than the standard anti-damp paints you can buy?

Many thanks
Andy

I don't think you should make a repair until you have stopped the source of the leak and found out exactly where it is.

As far as I'm aware SBR is only suitable for adding to renders or screeds. I've never heard of it being mixed with paint, perhaps someone here can clarify.

What I would do? Find the money and get the leak sorted, take back the damaged damp areas to the base and re-render. Most likely whatever has ruined the paintwork has also ruined the base layers.

It is a waste of time trying to decieve potential tenants in such a way.

Identify the source of the problem or get someone in to ID it for you. Could be something simple, easy to fix and cheap. The longer you leave it the more expensive it will get.

Post some pictures.

An SBR slurry (neat cement and SBR) can be used as barrier to prevent unwanted bleeding of substances through masonry.
