i need to add 3 new double points to a ring main. is it safe to disconnect one set of cables in an existing point (in order to add the new points) and then reconnect the new cable (using terminal blocks) to the disconnected cable then place said terminal blocks inside the existing point back box.

as long as what you are proposing here is an extension of the ring, this is fine. disconnect one set of wires from the back of the existing socket, and extend these on to the 3 new sockets in turn, then from the farthest socket, run a cable back to the existing socket (where the old (now extended) cable was wired to). Thus you have created an extension of the ring.

You cant just disconnect one cable and wire this to the sockets (this is what it sounds like, though the lack of punctuation makes it hard to decipher)

sorry about the punctuation but what you said is exactly what i want to do thanks for the reassurance
