Ok, contentious subject terminating electrics, but I have a problem.

Changing an old commercial building to residential. It has lots of fire exit signs and emergency lighting, all of which are no longer required.

Due to the age of the building I think it virtually impossible to trace the wiring as most of it is within thick cob walls.

Is there a way of terminating at the wall ? I have read this is a possible no no but surely there must be a solution other than trying to trace umpteen cables. I can't be the first with this conundrum....

No conduit as far as I can trace. Flush boxes seem to be the "standard" but it means I have lots of butt ugly blanks everywhere.....

The best solution is to find the origin(s) of the circuit and fully disconnect there. Then you dopn't have live wires in the walls.

Last ditch solution (only is all else fails):
You would then have to chop back the cable route until you get to a handy void (like the ceiling).
Put butt crimps (or Wago connectors) onto the live ends, pop the terminated cable into a "chocbox" or Wagobox. Mark the box clearly so the next guy will understand what it is for. Then pop the box into the void.
